Her Mission? To provide arresting, distinctive and sinfully enticing apparel and accessories for the Alternative cravings of Vancouver and elsewhere.  Please contact her with any questions, or to discuss custom design work.

Find the light in darkness and embrace its possibilities.

About Miriam Melanson – Designer, Boutique Owner, Instructor

Miriam, born and raised in Vancouver BC, is the 4th generation of women in her family who loves to craft, sew and sell her original creations. Granny, Nana and Mom all took turns introducing her to various textile based projects from a very young age. Making Barbie clothes spurred her interest in fashion and Marilyn Manson is to thank for her interest in alternative street styles and gothic apparel.

It was in the 10th grade that Miriam finally started to take a career in fashion seriously. She enrolled in fashion illustration, sewing, drafting, draping and beading courses to develop her portfolio and prepare for the commitment of design school. With the recommendation of her high school sewing instructor she attended Kwantlen Polytechnic University and received a BA in Fashion Design and Technology.

It was while in school that Flaming Angels came to fruition. Wanting to branch out on her own after graduation meant a plan was needed and the plan was to launch a collection of men’s and women’s clothing and accessories for the Gothic and Fetish community of Vancouver. Flaming Angels was officially born to the world in July 2000. Over time this collection evolved to include all sorts of accessories, home décor, bags and even some jewelry. The styling has also evolved to include Rockabilly, Punk, Pinup fashions and new unique style fusions. To this day, all creations are produced in-house. Putting focus on sustainable quality, zero waste and custom work has allowed Miriam to produce a large variety of designs each year as limited editions. As the Flaming Angels brand grew they moved into retail. The first retail incarnation opened in downtown Vancouver in Spring 2008. In March 2010 they moved to 4307 Main Street in the middle of Vancouver, where the boutique and studio are located today.

Since it’s opening in 2009, Miriam is also a member of faculty at VCAD, the Visual College of Art and Design. She instructs courses in the Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing & Merchandising programs.

Do you have any catalyst reaction belts? If so, can you give me an idea of what you’ve got in stock?

    Thanks
    Ivanka

We don’t have any Catalyst stock anymore, but Kat said she will be at some local shows selling this holiday season. I would double check if she will be at Portobello West, Make It or maybe The One of a Kind show.

    Dear Miriam
I am the Textiles Teacher at Kitsilano Secondary School, here in Vancouver. On January 26, 2012, we are hosting a Career Exploration Session for our grade 10 students, during the afternoon. I have been in your shop on Main Street. I was certainly impressed and I appreciate your terrific style and designs. I would be delighted if you could come to speak to our students about your experiences, your training in Textiles at Kwantlan , information about your shop…etc. I would hope the experience would be beneficial to both the students and your shop. If you could bring samples of your work for sale, that would be great….Look forward to hearing from you…and I really hope you will consider coming to our school. Thanks Jan Holm
